A refractory material or refractory is a material that is resistant to decomposition by heat, pressure, or chemical attack, and retains strength and form at high temperatures. Refractories are polycrystalline, poly phase, inorganic, non-metallic, porous, and heterogeneous. They are typically composed of oxides or carbides, nitrides etc. of the following materials: silicon, aluminium, magnesium, calcium, and zirconium. Some metals with melting points >1850 °C like niobium, chromium, zirconium, tungsten, rhenium, tantalum, molybdenum etc. are also considered refractories.
ASTM C71 defines refractories as non-metallic materials having those chemical and physical properties that make them applicable for structures, or as components of systems, that are exposed to environments above 1,000 °F (811 K; 538 °C)."
Refractory materials are used in furnaces, kilns, incinerators, and reactors. Refractories are also used to make crucibles and moulds for casting glass and metals and for surfacing flame deflector systems for rocket launch structures. Today, the iron- and steel-industry and metal casting sectors use approximately 70% of all refractories produced.
Castable refractory products are non-metallic materials that have chemical and physical properties used for creating heat-resistant structures that retain and insulate. Due to their high resistance to heat and thermal shock, you can use castable refractory cements and other products to build kilns and furnaces.
Examples: Conventional castables, low cement castables, ultra-low cement castables, no-cement castables, refractory plastics, mortars, and so on.
Refractory brick is a ceramic material that is normally used in high temperature environments because of its lack of flammability and because it is a decent insulator which reduces the amount of energy loss. Refractory brick is typically comprised of aluminium oxides and silica.
Ceramic Fiber Blanket is manufactured from spun ceramic fiber and is needled to provide exceptional handling strength for high-temperature insulation applications. Ceramic Insulation Blanket is typically offered in three standard grades referred to as commercial, High-Purity, and Zirconia grade.
CATHODE BLOCKS - are used in the lining of aluminum electrolysis cells. Sidewall blocks and ramming pastes round up the cathode product portfolio – providing complete custom-made solutions to optimally fit the requirements in the Aluminum Smelter.
